Learn how to master curling a football

SETUP THE DEVICE

Device Setting:

600 RPM 

SET UP

  • Place your fully charged, Curl Master Device on a flat grass or astroturf surface.
  • Turn the device on and select the highest speed 600 rpm to start training

TURN ON

600 RPM

  • Turn the device on and select the highest speed 600 rpm to start training
  • Select Spin Direction

OUTSIDE RIGHT

CLOCKWISE SPIN

  • Set the device to spin the ball clockwise.
  • Use the outside of your right foot to strike the left side of the ball.
  • Follow through outward (away from your body).

INSIDE RIGHT

COUNTER CLOCKWISE SPIN

  • Set the device to spin counter-clockwise.
  • Use the inside of your right foot to strike the right side of the ball.
  • Follow through across your body.

OUTSIDE LEFT

COUNTER CLOCKWISE SPIN

  • Set the device to spin counter-clockwise.
  • Use the inside of your right foot to strike the right side of the ball.
  • Follow through across your body.

INSIDE LEFT

CLOCKWISE

  • Set the device to spin counter-clockwise.
  • Use the inside of your right foot to strike the right side of the ball.
  • Follow through across your body.

PREPARING THE BALL SPIN FOR KICKING

Device setting:

600 RPM

PLACE BALL

VALVE SIDE UP

  • Place the ball on the cup, making sure the air valve is pointing upwards

SPIN THE BALL

  • Press the START button to start the ball spinning
  • Walk away 6 to 9 paces back
  • WAIT for green lights to come on IT IS READY TO BE KICKED

STRIKING THE BALL

Device setting:

600 RPM

ANGLE & POSITIONING

Approach direction

  • Run up approach between 30 – 90 degrees to the target, ensure the non kicking leg is around 20cm to the side of the device.
  • Whilst swinging the kicking leg to take the shot, follow through the swing approach angle to the ball can range from 30 to 90 degrees, depending on your shot and desired direction
  • Recover by stepping, dragging or skipping the non kicking leg after the kick.

FOOT POSITION

Below centre line

  • Kick the ball below the center line for a lower trajectory, and closer to the center line for a higher trajectory. Always below the centre line
  • Focus on curling the ball and directing it where you want, rather than on force initially.

KICK DIRECTION

  • The kick should follow the spin direction.
  • The foot should wrap around the ball
  • For lower trajectory shot kick higher below the center line and the further down for a higher trajectory.

SPIN FAMILIARISATION

Device Setting:

600 RPM

SENSORY

Get a feel for the spin

  • Your first 10 – 15 kicks are to purely sensory, so you can feel the sensation of kicking a Spinning ball
  • Focus on kicking the side of the ball and ensure the foot wraps around and skims the ball in the same spin direction

PRACTISE

Drills

  • Once you feel comfortable kicking the spinning ball and can follow through the shot
  • Try and aim the ball at your target, cross bar, or top bins
  • Repeat taking shots, making adjustment to your run up angle, or foot position, leg swinging motion, ankle locking action

REPEAT

  • Repeat taking shots
  • Making adjustment to your run up angle, or foot position, leg swinging motion, ankle locking action
  • Until you achieve the shot you want

POWER & ACCURACY

Device Setting:

500 RPM

CONTROL

Accuracy

  • Once you have begun to create get curled shot, focus on accuracy to achieve at least 75% on target
  • Once you achieve 75% accuracy, reduce the spinning speed to 500 rpm

MUSCLE MEMORY

Repeat the drills

  • Repeat training and. apply more power to the shot
  • Your Muscle memory assist in compensating for the lost speed on the device
  • Keep repeating targeted shots until you achieve 80% on target hit rate.

SPEED REDUCTIONS & END RESULT

Device Setting:

400 to 100 RPM

PRACTICE

Gradually Reducing speed

  • Always aim to achieve 80 % on target
  • Repeat the process down the other speeds 400, 300, 200 and 100 RPM
  • Repeating the process and with repetitive training, eventually try your shots with out the Curl Master.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Be Patient

  • A player should be able to create a curl shot within a few months depending on his control ability and aptitude
  • Some players adapt quicker than others
  • Be Patient, practice makes perfect. Good Luck !!

PERFORMANCE RESULTS

The Curl Master was tested in controlled trials at Loughborough University. The results below are shown are the highest % improvements on the original recorded results before training with Curl Master. After each 10 kick session on the Curl Master the players were tested again without the Curl Master device.

  • 80% of participants showed an immediate increase in spin rate from their baseline
  • 80% of participants showed an overall average increased spin rate from their baseline
  • The maximum increase in spin for a single participant was 57.2% after 30 Kicks using the Curl Master device.

The Beckham Cross

Set up cones at the edge of the penalty box (18-yard line)

Use the Curl Master to practice:

  • INSWINGERS: (Bending toward the goal) – Aim for a striker’s run.
  • OUTSWINGERS: (Bending away) – Target a late-arriving midfielder.
  • PROGRESSION: Add a moving defender (or mannequin) to simulate a fullback closing you down.

  • BEND BACK: Dribble toward the byline, use the Curl Master to curl a low, bending pass back to the “penalty spot.”
  • KEEP LOW: Focus on keeping the ball low but with enough curve to evade defenders.
